Destination Overview

Essential background & heritage of Batticaloa Dutch Fort & Kallady Lagoon

Square 17th-century colonial fortress on a tranquil island lagoon famous for its musical singing fish.

Constructed by the Portuguese in 1628 and seized by the Dutch in 1638, Batticaloa Fort is an intimate square bastion fortified by thick coral walls and surrounded on two sides by the tranquil waters of the lagoon. The adjacent Kallady Bridge is legendary for the mysterious acoustic phenomenon of "singing fish" heard on moonlit nights between April and September.
