Destination Overview

Essential background & heritage of Hummanaya Blowhole, Kudawella

The second largest natural marine blowhole in the world, shooting seawater up to 30 meters into the sky.

Hummanaya is the only known natural blowhole in Sri Lanka and one of the most powerful in the world. Deep ocean currents force surging waves through a narrow fissure at the base of a towering sea cliff, compressing water until it explodes through a chimney opening up to 25–30 meters high with a booming whistle heard kilometers away.
